We believe that children are God’s special gift to us all and that we are spiritually bound to care for them as Jesus would and help them draw close to our Heavenly Father. We focus on providing a safe and stimulating environment for our children.
There are learning opportunities and activities that will help them grow personally and spiritually in an atmosphere that fosters a feeling of acceptance, love, care and purpose.
Mrs. Melissa Calton accepted our call to serve as Children’s Minister in April 2008. “Mrs. Melissa,” as she is known, has brought tremendous experience, contagious excitement and focused purpose into our ministry that seeks to reach, teach and nurture children in an environment that is safe, loving and Christ-centered. Community Baptist’s steady growth, especially in the area of young families with children, has made it important that the Children’s Ministry be vital and vibrant. Mrs. Melissa’s experience and energy are enhanced by her love of Christ and love for the children and families to whom she ministers.
Mrs. Melissa came to Community after having served nearby First Baptist Church of Helena as Pre-School and Children’s Coordinator for more than a decade. During her tenure there she coordinated the FBC-Helena preschool and children’s programs as attendance there nearly quadrupled. She also led the senior adult and children’s choirs there. In 2002 she served on the VBS Missions Team for the Alabama State Board of Missions. For 6 years she was the VBS Director for the Shelby Baptist Association.
Over the years, her other employment has included 16 years with South Central Bell in Louisiana, where she rose from a long-distance operator to state-wide supply manager, and positions as a human resources secretary for a hospital nursing recruiter and payroll clerk at Samford University in Birmingham.
It may be that Mrs. Melissa’s very evident la joie de vivre arises from her Louisiana roots, although she and her husband of 30+ years, David, have been in Alabama since 1990. She and David are blessed to have two of their three adult children (and both of their grandchildren) living nearby their home in Alabaster.
One of Mrs. Melissa’s favorite Bible verses is Numbers 6:24-26:
“The LORD bless you and protect you; the LORD make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you; the LORD look with favor on you and give you peace.” (HCSB)
Her favorite saying is: “Servin’ The Shepherd, Feedin’ His Lambs.”
Mrs. Melissa goes on to explain, “I just LOVE that…it’s what I do! I see all children as little lambs lookin’ for a shepherd and I love telling them about the Good Shepherd who’s LOOKIN’ for them!
